Questions to ask when selecting a behavioral health (BH) provider

When choosing a BH provider, ask yourself:

  • Is it important to you that the counselor can prescribe drug treatment?
  • Do you prefer a male or female therapist?

Select the type of provider you want. Make a list of names of network providers who may meet your needs. Call the providers’ offices to get more information about their practice.

Here are some questions you may want to ask:

  • Does the provider have experience treating your issue?
  • Is the provider accepting new patients?
  • What are their hours?
  • How does the provider run the session?
  • What does the provider expect of the patient?
  • What is the cancellation policy?
  • Does the provider focus on any age group, such as teens or seniors?
  • What decides the course of treatment, and when is therapy considered completed?
